Two v300 series inkjet printers were developed in collaboration with Dell design team. This project demonstrates successful partnership between Lexmark and Dell, as well as my capability to turn a conceptual design, to a design that is shipped to the customers.
The industrial design follows the Casino language carefully, representing Dell's design values of strength, power, stability, and reliability. The form philosophy of the two-tone ‘wrap’ aesthetic is carefully implemented to house the print engine, not an easy task with a machine of many over lapping moving parts and user access points.
Large amount of glossy black surfaces caused molding challenges to this product. Small cutouts and holes in the surfaces for features such as the buttons and the card readers also created opportunities for the plastic to show flow and knit line marks. Working closely with the part designers and the component engineers, we designed and placed every details and attachment features meticulously to ensure the highest quality of molded parts.
Changes are inherent in product development. Photo printing features were added, taken away, and modified during the course of the development to appropriately position the products in the market. Open communication and direct relationship with the key stakeholders between these two firms allowed me to respond to these changes in the most timely manner.
The bright LCD screen with rotation feature helps the users navigate the interface with ease on the high end machine. With great collaboration, I was able to work with Dell to deliver interaction details that meet the requirements of both Lexmark and Dell.
