Industrial design development of a desktop printer.
Industry: Consumer electronics
The HP 6840 is one of the first HP inkjet printer to use integrated wireless antenna to connect to the PC. The most important design element was to clearly communicate it's connectivity to the users, even from a distance.
The HP Deskjet 6840 was designed for the technology savvy users, where wireless connectivity can be appreciated. Design emphasis was placed on keeping the over all form simple and elegant, much like a high end audio device, where the information of displayed content is just as important as the form factor to the over all design experience.
With the form factor simplified, the availability of the wireless feature, as well as the actual connectivity status are further emphasized. The operator panel integrates both back lit buttons and the wi-fi status bars seamlessly.
HP's Accelerated Curvature design element is visible in the profile of the device. The branding is also subtly integrated into the translucent end cap, differentiated with texture. The combination of polished end cap and the chrome trim piece further pronounce the side details of the product.
These end cap details must not compete with the frontal focal element of the over all design. Many subtle iterations were considered during the course of development to find a good visual balance.
The over all design stretches the product side to side. This linear characteristic, in conjunction with the treatment of the end caps, creates a device with a great sense of professionalism and reliability.
